In a podcast episode of "Safe Space Chats" with Madame Speaker, Lorraine Tarambwa shared her tumultuous journey from Zimbabwe to South Africa, marked by perseverance and heartbreak. Arriving in South Africa in 2008 at 18 to escape her parents' toxic relationship, Lorraine faced numerous challenges. Initially homeless and jobless, she relied on the kindness of acquaintances and managed to survive through various low-paying jobs. Her life took a significant turn when she met her Nigerian ex-husband while working in a wholesale shop. Their relationship, though initially supportive, eventually deteriorated due to financial struggles, mistrust, and his controlling behavior.
Despite opening her own shop, financial difficulties persisted, exacerbated by her husband's erratic employment and jealous tendencies. His controlling nature extended to managing household finances meticulously and accusing Lorraine of financial mismanagement. Their relationship became further strained when Lorraine discovered her sister's pregnancy, which her husband denied responsibility for, adding to the household tension.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Lorraine's husband suggested online dating for financial gain, leading her to form a connection with a Nigerian doctor. This relationship caused further jealousy and conflict, culminating in her husband leaving and taking important documents with him. Lorraine’s desperate attempts to reconcile, including spiritual interventions, proved futile. She even contemplated drastic measures driven by anger and desperation but ultimately chose not to proceed.
In the end, Lorraine found solace and a fresh start through a Nigerian vendor who helped her establish a small business selling clothes, allowing her to regain independence and stability. Despite the hardships, Lorraine’s resilience and determination enabled her to rebuild her life for herself and her child.
